Jacque Rupp is a fine-art photographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area whose most recent work uses image and story to question the labels society assigns to us — widow, grandmother, wife — and to imagine what lies beyond them. She challenges stereotypes, opens new possibilities, and sparks conversations that shift the way we see ourselves. She is a visual storyteller.
A lifelong cinephile, Rupp’s work is deeply inspired by the moving image — its mood, its framing, its ability to hold tension and ambiguity. That cinematic sensibility runs through her practice — with herself as subject — moving between the real and the imagined to explore feminine identity and purpose with unflinching honesty.
Rupp studied photography at Stanford University, the Los Angeles Center of Photography, and the Santa Fe Workshops, building on a lifelong commitment to the visual arts. She holds an MBA from Santa Clara University and her background in leadership roles in Silicon Valley’s high-tech industry brings both creative vision and strategic thinking to her practice. She serves on the Advisory Board for UNAFF (United Nations Affiliated Film Festival).
Her photographs are held in private collections and have been exhibited in international shows and publications. Rupp was selected as a Critical Mass finalist in 2022 and 2023.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“The arts help us to understand ourselves as they illuminate our common humanity.”
As the daughter of a psychologist, I came early to the understanding that art and life work in concert — each deepening the other, and both, at their best, bringing us closer to ourselves and to each other.
My images are uniquely personal. I am drawn to intimacy, intensity, authenticity. Having experienced loss early in life, I gravitate toward themes of longing and solitude — but always with hints of hope and rebirth not far away.
I am particularly interested in how women have been defined — and how they have come to define themselves. It is a story that has unfolded over the past century, and one that is still being written.
I am a storyteller. I move through the world with curiosity and openness — learning from other cultures, other people, other ways of seeing — and looking always for the moments that remind us how much we share. With a lifelong love for the moving image, I create photographs with a cinematic flair.
